Powering the Future of Transport: Woden Bus Depot and the Path to Electrification

Across Australia, governments are grappling with how to transition transport fleets to zero emissions. In the ACT, the challenge is particularly pressing: with a target of net zero by 2045, the shift to electric buses has been identified as one of the most complex hurdles. The vehicles themselves are only part of the story — the bigger test lies in depot readiness, charging logistics, and managing the impact on local energy grids.

The redevelopment of Woden Bus Depot reflects this forward-thinking approach. More than just a facility upgrade, the project was designed with an eye to the future, creating an operational environment that supports today’s fleet while preparing for the demands of electrification. From maintenance bays to charging infrastructure and driver amenities, Woden sets the template for how Canberra’s depots can evolve to support a zero-emissions transport network.

As part of this redevelopment, IES Automation delivered the Building Management and HVAC control systems for the facility. Built on the Reliable Controls® platform, the system integrates ventilation, air conditioning, and environmental management into a single intelligent framework. This ensures healthy indoor air quality, efficient operation of building services, and — critically — a clear picture of energy use across the site.

That visibility will become increasingly important as electric bus charging introduces new peaks and operational pressures. By embedding smart controls from the outset, the ACT Government has positioned Woden Depot to adapt to higher energy demands while maintaining efficiency and safety. Remote monitoring and triaging functions also allow issues to be identified early, reducing downtime and keeping the focus on service delivery.

For IES Automation, Woden demonstrates the role that modern building systems play in enabling electrification. While vehicles and charging stations capture the headlines, it is the unseen infrastructure — HVAC, controls, and energy management — that keeps depots running smoothly and ensures the transition is sustainable.

As the ACT continues its push toward a fully electric bus fleet, Woden Bus Depot shows what is possible: a facility designed not only for today’s needs, but ready for the future of transport.
